Smartkoat claims and doorstep salesman..

My Mother had the usual salesman round on the doorstep, she is interested in saving energy and also money (obviously) but I'm concerned its just a gimmick and an expensive one at that.

There website is smartproof dot co dot uk. Basically looks like they clean the roof, then coat it with some paint, which they claim has a thermal resistance of 0.119 W/m/k and saves 70% of heat loss............, they say "As it has great thermal properties which equates to 2/3 of the insulation value of rockwool". The claims are difficult to back up, and I can't find anything about the government subsiding them, which is they say is around 30%.

Anyway, it would be nice if the government had some sort of website, so such claims could be easily investigated.

But as I can't find anything on the web, I haven't been able to look further.

The company reckon that a independent company called 'Red' has used some hi-tech thermal imagining equipment to investigate what homes need doing etc. Yes this is easy to see that its a sales ploy but even so, can painting your roof do anything to save energy???

Can anyone tell me about these r-values and whether they do make any increase to energy saving when applied?

I found an older post on Aquashield, seems relevant. But I can't post links.

I don't believe you are actually investigating these claims. If you want insulation go and buy some from B & Q. How can painying the roof insualte the property?

If you aren't interested in the 'magic' roof paint, I'm sure he'll have some snake oil you might be interested in

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0acDKa1e1C8 The coating in question IS real BUT, the coating companies are twisting the true use. 70& REFLECTIVE HEAT is right IF your calculations are based on heat from the sun being prevented from going into the roof space.
This is a highly used product in countries where air conditioners are used on poorly roofed buildings. Thing a typical spanish villa, with no insulation, but 2-3 air-con units on all day. That is where the 'proof' is aimed. Your roof coating company is using the lack of information to sell it to keep warm IN this is not the case, the % saving in this case is NOT worthy of the speil.
Smartcoat is probably another ex-aquashield rep, settin up on his own (and there are plenty) I think the link above is right one????????

Again despite the opinions above, the product was developed through NASA 20 years ago, and IS VALID, the issue is the way it is sold, and the claims made by the hard sell indusrty..
  • The Devil is in the detail (and in the exorbitant price), all figures are quoted ex VAT, and cancellation incurs heavy penalties. Small print is so small it literally takes a magnifier to read. It's also extensive.

Just had a quote for £150/sqm flat roof (relay felt, and spray with smartcoat + 10 year warranty), demanding 20% upfront payment.

This is approx 4 times the cost of having it done conventionally. If you sign up you discover they are not just expensive, pushy and overstating their benefits; they are also legal!

That I didn't realise how old it was, but they are still around - and very active (and this was the only post that came up on their activities).

I was hoping for some indication of other issues or help in dealing with them...
