Best Free or low cost web site

I would like to design a web site for my daughters and friends to use to chat etc (rather than using other social networking sites). I'm not bad on a computer but not technical at all. Can anyone recommend an idiot proof free site so that I can design a web site or for a small cost and is it also possible to put a secure password so only they can access it?

why not just use skype computer to computer calls for free and can conference call as well. can set to be private as well so unless they let someone know there username no one can call them!

Well if you want it to look all fancy like FaceBook etc then that would take a lot and there is no way to get that free.

If you just want them to be able to communicate then you can use the following sites:

freeshoutbox.net
A FREE Basic chat where only people who have been given the address can join the chat etc.

A little bit better looking option AND still FREE would be:
forumer.com

Or you could go buy a domain and either host it on your own machine or buy some cheaper hosting and setup phpBB:
.phpbb.com

That is totally free forum software the only cost would be the hosting and domain (unless you hosted it yourself) then you could get a FREE dns entry that would resolve a domain name to your own IP address:
.dyndns.com
