Disconnecting Gas Fire Advice

I'm having the chimney swept in a few weeks time which will require the free standing gas fire to be moved aside for the chimney sweep to get his eqiupment in.

The gas feed to the fire is via a rigid metal pipe which prevents the fire from being moved. Is it acceptable for me to disconnect this pipe from the fire (having first isolated the gas supply) so as to move the fire out of the way ?

Or must this disconnection / reconnection be carried out by a qualified gas fitter ?

you can do it providing you are "competent"

If all goes well then no problem, if there is an explosion then you will have to convince a court that you are competent which might be difficult if bits of your 3 bed semi are now in the garden of the next street.

I'd have thought that your sweep would have the solution
  • This MUST be carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer, as must any work involving gas.

As above. Its not worth trying to interpret the law as to whether you are competent. Also, you won't have any equipment for testing for leaks when it is put back in. A gas fitter will probably only charge £50. Seems a pity to try uncheduled space travel for such a small sum.

    Mistaken, although well meant.
    • You have to be competent to do the job.
    • You have to be Gas Safe registered to charge someone else for doing the job
So, you can DIY if you are competent.
