in Credit cards
I got a letter today sent to my address but to someone else's name from sygma bank about a flybe credit card, which has been declined. I was obviously very worried that someone else has used my address fraudulently to try to get a credit card. I phoned up Sygma, and they confirmed the card was declined because the name and address did not match. They then said, 'Just throw the letter away', and seemed surprised that I insisted that I wanted to find out more about how someone else had used my address, which is a crime. Eventually they traced that the application had been made at Exeter airport, but they won't give me the details on the application form (I asked for phone number/email address etc), so I now have to wait until Monday to contact their fraud department. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm really worried that my details are being used in this way, and that it could affect my credit rating. Also that sygma didn't seem to care in the least!

They can't release details about the applicant to you - that would be a breach of the data protection act.
It won't have any effect on your credit rating.
A fraudster can put any old address on the application, it is up to the creditor to establish whether or not they actually live there, and in this case Sygma realised they don't live at that address and accordingly declined the application.
They may place a CIFAS marker at your address now that you advised them of the fraud.
This can have an effect on your future applications for credit, in that a creditor may ask you for more ID than with prior applications, but won't cause application you make to be declined.
To re-iterate.
It won't effect your credit worthiness.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Thanks Izools. It still seems odd that someone gave my address when they happened to be in Exeter airport! I have tracked down someone of the name on the application form who lives not too far away, certainly very close to the airport, so wasn't sure if I should take this to the police, or just inform sygma and let it be. I don't know what else they could be applying for under my address.0

I'm not sure it's a police matter. Constitutes civil fraud but probably not criminal fraud. Especially considering they didn't actually obtain anything by deception, just attempted to.
Nothing anyone can do to prevent fraudsters supplying fake addresses unfortunately.
It might even have been that the person who took the application at the airport wasn't paying attention and put in the wrong postcode.
It is FlyBe, after all... not exactly the most reputable airline in the land!Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Yes you're right. And looking online, it seems possible there's only one number difference in the postcode that could have made it a genuine error on either side. This has made me slightly less worried.0

We may have a post on here next week or after along the lines of "I applied for a Flybe card weeks ago and still haven't heard back..."
That'd be hilariousness :rotfl:Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48
