Installing driver for HPLJ5M in Win7

Having some difficulty. Printer is networked. If I go thru control panel and click add printer, it finds the printer and its IP address but doesn't list this printer in the list of drivers. When I search online everyone says click the Windows Update button, but it doesn't seem to be there. Any ideas? I can't even download the driver from HP as their site just says the drivers is available within Win 7

Try connecting to it direct, presumably USB, it may then install the drivers, you should then be able to add the printer/ or change the port to network.

same problem with Vista driver. HP says it is included with Vista and don't give an option to download it.

It's an old printer, so only has parallel and ethernet connections. The computer is new, so only has USB.

Seems like other people have the same problem. I followed the instructions provided by a Windows support tech on Windows Answers, but it doesn't find any problems.

Go to printers and select ADD Printer. Select add new printer port and select standard TCP/IP port from the dropdown. Select Next and put the IP address in the hostname field and click next. From this point it should either select the printer driver automatically or you should get the full list of printers with the Windows Update option.

Unfortunately, the problem is not with the windows detecting the printer, or the correct port or IP address. It does all of that fine. It even identifies the printer as HP LaserJet 5M. The trouble is it doesn't GIVE me the Windows Update option. The button simply isn't there! I have another PC running the same version of Windows 7 and everything is fine there, but not with the second PC.

Again, this assumes you have a Windows Update button on the Install Printer Driver dialogue box, but I don't. Can't work out why.

Windows Update button missing? Possible solution may not be limited to Virtual CD causing this problem. Worth a try
