TalkTalk modem problem - variation

Hi Folks. I've got 2 problems with a talktalk modem ( the Huawei MT-882 ). Problem Two is the need to get it to save the username and password. I've got that sussed, all I need now is to solve problem One - get computer (XP sp1) to see the modem (USB - ethernet not an option). The CD worked fine, the security software downloaded fine. Then I disconnected and not only lost the connection, but have now lost the modem. The machine will not see the device, but the CD reckons that old drivers are installed and need removing. Needless to say, downloading the drivers from the net doesn't work - the new drivers aren't being seen either. Short of registry butchery, anyone got a quick fix?

Try unplugging it, then right-click on My computer -> Hardware tab -> Device manager, and uninstall the modem.
Hope you manage to sort it ou - I had exactly the same problem with the Smartax modem. Round and round in bl***y circles, with the PC telling me I couldn't install the drivers because they were already installed, even though I'd searched right through for every single file in the installation folder. Finally gave up, used my own modem and sent their pile of kak back to them.0 -
Thanks tawnyowls - will try the uninstall after unplugging. I've never encountered anything like this, despite working with IT for more years than I'm admitting to.0

XP Sp1 on broadband, without a router..
you might catch something, make sure your firewall is on, and patch with https://www.windowsupdate.com.
Ethernet cards only cost about £3 from ebuyer.com, much better than usb, especially with a router (which I'd recommend from a security point of view)Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks albertross - I've been waiting for broadband to upgrade the machine - it's hardly used at the moment so sp2 hasn't been an issue. Machine has full security on it already. I'm with you - no-one should be on broadband by any connection unless they're sat behind a good firewall.0
