Only details I can find are Dell Optiplex GX 110
    x 86 Family 6 model 8 stepping 6 - no other info.

Thank for advice - how easy is it to install extra memory - don't mind having a go at fixing things, as long I know what I'm doing !!!

  • It's really easy to do, but the motherboard will only take so much. The older ones can be real stingy, mine is pretty limited...it only takes up to 32gb of RAM...whoops I'm a snob!

Go ahead and download the program called CPU-Z. I can't post the link because I'm a new user, darn.

In the program go to the section called 'Mainboard' and it'll say 'Manufacturer' and 'Model, post whatever it says in those two boxes. From there we can figure this out!

ok done that - info from CPU-Z is Dell Optiplex GX110

info from crucial website = manufacturers specifications:

    Maximum Memory: 512MB
    Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
    Standard Memory: 64MB removable
    USB Support: 1.x Compliant
The amount of memory your Windows computer will recognize depends on two factors:
the maximum capacity your computer hardware can handle and the version of Windows your computer uses.
The most memory the 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) is only 3GB or 3.5GB, if your computure hardware can handle it. The 64-bit version of Windows can address even more memory

Before you start upgrading ram -

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

XP can run fine with 256MB ram - what's your commit charge?

many of the these will also help with hd space.

Before you start upgrading HD, find out where the space has gone, xp shouldn't use more than 3GB.

    - they were (1) slot CPU / or / (2) socket CPU's, but both types of MOBO were 2x256 maximum if I REM correctly. If I'm wrong someone correct me !

  • Hi all - well computer is now squeaky clean, running very fast BUT still no spare disk space !!!

Can I make startup/recovery disc(s) for Windows and other programs - if so, maybe can wipe hard drive, and start again???

Run windirstat to see where the space has gone. Something other than windows is using around 6GB

Some of it will be used up by pagefile.sys -what's your commit charge peak and physical memory total from task manager, performance

If you have anything important on the external drive and it's your only copy, copy to dvd or somewhere else too.
