Suggestion wanted for 'none smelling of plastic' electric kettle

Bought a new one a couple of weeks ago and sought tips, on here, of how to get rid of the plastic smell. Tried bicarb of soda and then vinger but still not happy with the smell. Lady in an electrical shop earlier said they did get returns on 'smelly' kettles so our problem wasn't unique.

So with our budget of around £30 is there any kettle that is less likely to smell of plastic. I have also read stainless steel kettles can smell of metal.

IIRC There was a similar thread not very long ago. The search button is your friend.

I remember suggesting that the OP just swapped their plastic kettle for a metal one.

    That is what I did.
  • Hi,
People have laughed at me in the past for smelling kettles before I buy them, but I absolutely HATE that smell and it does linger and make your cuppa taste odd!
I've always found that the 'value' kettles from supermarket brands don't usually smell. We've had a cheaper-than-a-fiver kettle from T**co for years now and it's still going strong.
Just take a whiff before you buy :) HTH

We've had it for two weeks and cleaned with bicarb and vinegar but smell just as bad. It will go back tomorrow and I will give any potential new one the smell test in the shop as BlimusOreilly suggests.

Took our kettle back and assistant took a smell and said yes he could smell the plastic so no problems getting a refund.

Bought a Breville Illuminated White Plastic Jug Kettle from Argos and boiled it a few times (not just the twice it says) to make sure and so far no horrible plastic smell.

We did attract some funny looks when we were going round other shops smelling inside kettles.

I bought this Russell Hobbs Ceylon after having the same problems with other kettles: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Russell-Hobbs-13355-Stainless-Classic/dp/B000IHYSB2

Which magazine rated it as the best kettle around and it definitely doesn't smell of plastic (or metal).
