Washing Machine Water Overheating!

I put on my washing m/c today at normal 40 deg wash and when I came back to check it an hour later it was still washing and the glass was too hot to touch so I switched it off and emptied the water which came out steaming hot - it was like a boil wash! Obviously some clothes ruined, but does anyone know what the problem might be please?

Sounds like the water heater thermostat.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
