Oil vs gas central heating

I need a new oil tank but am wondering if it would be cheaper to go over to gas. Does anyone know if this is the case?

    What gas? LPG or Mains?
You also need to be aware that they have just started investigating the off main fuel prices because of the jumps/spikes in LPG and Oil.

What would be the cost of you getting a mains gas connection, assuming it's available but not connected?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

We had gas in our previous house but, as there's no gas in the village where we live now we have oil.

    I like:
    1. the fact that with oil you have no cumbersome supply contract but simply decide each time who you will buy from. 2. you have an assured supply in your own tank.

I don't like the current price of oil vs. gas but at last that's been adequately highlighted and I expect the suppliers are now under scrutiny.
We have a 2500 litre tank and use about 1800 litres per year i.e. more than a year's requirement which means that I can buy at any time [usually summer and definitely not in mid-winter] when the price looks good.

To sum up: it's a gamble re. cost but a big oil tank helps.

Going on recent news reports make sure you have an alarm fitted to the tank which goes off it is empties quickly. Also that its as secure as possible, lighst, locks etc.

I understand that the advice to farmers etc. who hold big stocks of diesel is to leave unlocked as otherwise the thieves just drill a hole through the tank, take as much as they can carry and leave the rest to leak away with consequent environmental problems.

i listened to jeremy vine during the week about oil theft and it didnt seem that farmers were the only targets of the thieves--normal households anywhere are at risk and there seemed little that can be done to protect tank--thieves were viewing neighbourhoods on goggle earth to see where tanks were!

  • How about some active IR beams connected to an alarm in the house?
