Vista - Advice on best time to buy

I'm quite happy with XP at the moment. I shant be getting Vista til I need Vista, and even then I'll probably just switch wholly to linux. I'm mostly only using my PC for internet, MSN and a bit of office work.sco0ter wrote:Thats where STREAMLINING comes into play... Thats the reason Microsoft let you do it and even tell you how.
I think you mean slipstreaming.0 -

Slipstream service packs... streamline updates.
There is a way you can Streamline your XP disk with all recent released updates before you install it... I forgot that Streamlining is actually a third party software and not Microsoft... Slipstreaming is.0 -
sco0ter wrote:So you would pay hundreds for a PC and then some £300 + for a console when a good Vista PC with a DirectX10 graphics card can deliver games that will beat an XBOX360 for graphics and effects.... Sounds like a waste of money to me... I will stick to my PC for games... although how this makes anyone a "geek" I dont understand....
A PS2 is about £99.00 and I didnt mean geek personally I meant in a general way, your not a geek your a very helpful chap actually.

No I dont I mean Slipstreaming SP2 onto your original disk then Streamlining (with HFSLIP) with all the latest hotfixes so you have a completely up to date installation disk.AMO wrote:There is a big difference in installation time with using an XP SP2 disc compared to an initially released disc. Waiting for the downloads and the time it takes to do a service pack upgrade is torturous.

Never noticed any difference in time between my Windows XP OEM (not even SP1) and my rebuilt SP2 installation disk 32mins start to finish.0 -

But Vista will be able to run XBOX 360 titles (PC Versions) that will look better on the PC than the 360 with the right hardware and also be LIVE compatible so you can play against 360 users.... A whole Microsoft world domination type thing going on as they are also talking of having swappable peripherals as well. The PS2 and XBOX are coming to the end of thier life cycle.
If you look at the way things are going it wont be long before the XBOX 360 (or more to the point its next version)becomes a PC with upgradable components and end up being a whole entertainment system as well. With this release of Vista microsoft seem to be trying to bridge the gap between console and PC with cross platform playing and totall compatability.0 -

You should see the old xBox in my front room. (15minute modification accepted).. but it already does all of that..
As for Lappy and Vista... I would wait for the New Year simply for the New Year sales.
+ I also prefer a clean install.
As for supply and demand eluded to by a previous post..
Ford are about to launch the new Mondeo.. I therefore wouldn't buy the current model for full price just cause it does the same thing. If you buy anything make sure you get the option to upgrade included. It will help your resale value.
ps. please feel free to disregard anything I have siad above.. I've had a canny few tonight!0 -

There's the occasional rollup that you can slipstream in.
You can use nLite to get rid of all the junk Microsoft try to install, which could be called streamlining.
And in the same post I say that the Streamlining is NOT a Microsoft thing that was my mistake... Slipstreaming is. Streamlining was refered to when you used a third party software to add the critical updates .. It was the term used on the forum because it used to get confusing calling it slipstreaming as people got mixed up with the Microsoft way of doing things from the command line.
Anyway this is my last post on this subject as this is definately going the same way as the last (and every) Vista thread goes.
Things to consider...
If you are buying a new computer .. BEWARE.. I have not seen any documentation from Microsoft (the makers and therefore suppliers of the upgrade) about Windows XP Home being included in thier free upgrade programme.
Vista Basic is what you get and is described by Microsoft as the edition if you want to surf the internet and check e-mails (link to difference in versions in previous post). It also is the upgrade version and may NOT clean install...
I have not seen any proof of Vista being over hungry with rescources but that is with RC2 .. In fact people have run it on close to the minimum spec machines and said it runs great (1 posted in this thread I believe).
Vista is definately taking over from XP and eventually XP will got the same as ME and have no support and with around 4-6 updates a week then those staying could be in trouble.
Open your minds to the possability that this MIGHT be the system everyone moaned XP wasnt. Dont condemn something you havent tried (and before you say anything I mean RETAIL version as BETA still doesnt show off everything) at least give it time to prove itself and not put people off by constantly damning a thing just because you dont like it.0 -

Sorry, you hadn't done at the time, you must've edited it after I quoted you.0
