I doubt the development woud take very long as it is just entering in addresses of places to go on google maps - the chip shop example was just an example though thats not what I'm trying to do.

Good thought. If are planning to build this app then go ahead, you can also take the help of app development companies. It is better to search in the internet and find experienced app development company and get the app built by them.

Erm... Isn't there already an app that does this? It comes as standard on most android phones, it's called places on mine. (part of google maps as pointed out earlier)

Tells you everything you could need nearby, banks, pubs, restaurants etc.
