Xsara Picasso is a nice car, but have some problems with reliability on older models.0

Have a 1.6 Dec 2006 Xsara Picasso Exclusive and very happy with it indeed - loads of room for transporting, 110 GBP a year road tax (this is simply ACE) and excellent MPG - does an extra 33% of the distance on the same amount of fuel that my old Rover 618 used to do. Ideal for getting baby in and out of the back of too - I would heartily recommend.0

Ford Galaxy/VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra. All basically the same cars, and in diesel varient, they all have the same VW sourced 1.9-litre TDI lump, too. The Ford will probably be the cheapest to obtain, and I'd imagine you'll get something along the lines of a 2000 X-Reg for the money. The diesel would be the pick of the bunch, as the 2.3-litre petrol one is thirsty, as is the V6!
Edit: I just read you want a 5-seater.... ;(0 -
If you don't need an MPV then I would go for an older Estate.
If running costs are an issue then avoid auto as it bumps up the Co2 that your road tax will be based on and fuel economy will be worse
Something German or Japanese may be your best bet but anything at that price point could be trouble unfortunetely, so as someone above said buy something with 12 months MOT and a warranty of sorts if you can0 -
Korean, like Japanese build, but cheaper to buy.
Some time back we had 2nd generation Kia Carens from new, traded it in 3 years later without ever a fault, really, really spacious, takes 3 child seats across the back easy and boot is massive!
Can be a bit noisy when pushed and a bit rolly round bends but driven sensibly the ride comfort is amazing and the grip of the road is fine.
Here is a low mileage example on you budget.European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -
would a roof box mean that you could be less fussy about boot space or is that in addition to a roof box?0

You can have my Zafira for £1500 . 2001 Y in black .107k miles Ive been the last owner for 8yrs . No real problems . Excellent runner . Family mechanic does the service n MOTs . normally a 5 seater with a big boot ... 7 seats when u want them , but then u loose the boot . We are a 2 car family and this one beats the rest hands down .
It's a 1.8 petrol comfort SE - alloys electric windows all round ... better than the gutless 1.6 . Non smoker no pets.
I'm looking out for a Focus Diesel myself 1.6 tdci zetec climate ... anyone ? Dark interior trim please .0 -
Our Picasso 2.0 HDi of 2001 vintage has been very reliable in our 6 years of ownership. Other than routine servicing and a timing belt, it has needed a vacuum pump for the brake servo and a low pressure diesel pump and still on original clutch at 118k and no signs of wearing out. It does have a rattly aircon pump and sounds like it needs a new suspension mounting soon, but is what I call bombproof.
Mine will be up for sale soon as I have bought a Beetle for the wife.0
