EoN Economy 18
Hi,
I am on economy 18. I rang EoN to find out if i could swtich plans, they told me to ring the boiler company if it was possible who said no.
Is there any advice anyone can offer on what i can do to save money on this plan or how i can switch to another plan maybe by switching the meter.
I spoke to EoN direct but they seem to have no idea about anything.
Thanks in advance

I'm no expert but I think how it works is that Economy 18 is wired into your heating and hot wire. It SHOULD be possible to change to a standard meter or Economy 7 and go onto other tariff. However, there will probably be a charge for this and before you arrange any jobs you should get an electrician to have a look at the set up you have because it may interfere with how your water is heated and when the heating comes on.0

Attempting to switch away from this plan will inevitably end in tears (unless you get someone in who knows what they are doing to advise you what needs changing ... it probably isn't going to be cheap)
Of course, the current boiler will work on any tariff electricity ... as the elctricity is all the same, the only difference is the cost. Trying to run your boiler that was obviously designed to suit E18 on single rate electricity is going to cost a fortune.
It may actually prove more cost effective to move rather than get the current installation/appliances changed to suit a different tariff :eek:
As to reducing cost, then reducing consumption is the only way forward if you don't want to spend money changing things. All the usual advice on reducing consumption applies - it is irrespective of tariff."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Thanks for your help both i think sticking with the plan seems the best option.0

Hi hellow
I'm sorry you were unhappy with the response when you called. Thought it might help if I gave you a brief description of Economy 18 metering.
Economy 18 is aimed at customers with an electric combination boiler and any of the following.
Off peak space and water heating;
Under floor heating;
Electric flow boilers;
Redring boilers.
These set ups provide 18 hours of cheaper electricity per day for dedicated electric space and water heating equipment.
The 18 hours are spread throughout 3 periods in the morning, afternoon and night.
Within these hours, there is also a 5 hour period of cheaper rate electricity for general household appliances like washing machines, tumble dryers, etc.
As echoecho says, the meter will be wired directly into your water/heating circuits and changing it could affect the operation of these services.
Echoecho is also spot on about the advisability of seeking professional advice before changing to a more conventional single rate/Economy 7 meter. Whilst this is certainly possible, I always advise customers thinking of going down this route to have their set up checked out by an independent approved electrician first.
I can confirm, we are currently charging £51.06 for non-essential meter changes.
Hope this is of some use hellow. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.
