Question about PCI express.

OK, I should be able to find this out, but I've googled til I'm blue in the face and I can't

I've just odered a new shinny Shuttle, it comes with one pci and one pci express slot. Anyone know if you can run pci card's in a pcie slot ?

pci cards cannot be used in a pci-express slot as the are incompatable
pcie can only be used with graphics cards (and sound cards, i think)
  • You need the special PCIe 1x slot for sound cards i believe (its smaller than the PCI x16 used for graphix)
  • There is (VERY detailed!!!) information on Wikipedia but if you look at the picture on the right of the screen comparing the different size PCIe slots to a PCI slot you will see they are very different.

you cant run a pci card in a pcie slot but you can get all sorts of cards in a pcie format these days.

you could try looking at pcie-pci bridges. I've only used them in closed chassis
designs but they must be out there for the average consumer. Your problem with a sff case may be space though.

it is possible to get a PCI expansion card that plugs into the PCI express socket to give up to 5 PCI slots (we make them at work!)...I'll see if I can find a link to them...
