every time i see people posting about water saving devices i feel i should warn folks that if you have a pressurised system, a water saving widget can damage your shower unit...

i used one last year and within days it had bu99ered the valve of ours, and resulted in costing me several hundred pounds as we had to replace the entire shower unit...

I used the shower widget on my recently fitted thermostatic shower and within a couple of weeks the shower hose deformed and burst. I've never felt that the shower has been right since, but maybe that's just me, it's in the bin now anyway.

And you also need to be wary of the Hippo's that you put in your WC cistern. I am aware of a large water company that had to remove these from the cisterns in its own offices because the resulting flush was insufficient to move the “waste” through the soil pipe. This resulted in constant blockages and flooding back through the pan. They also then had the cost of having to rod the system through to clear it as well as clearing up the mess and sorting out the lifting flooring. It will obviously depend upon the arrangement of the pipes on each individual system, so if you do use just keep an eye open from problems.

Yes, I think I know who you mean, I used to work for them and heard that story too ;) We gave (still do) loads of them last year when we had a drought order in place and whilst they do work to a certain extent in older toilets, people need to remember that modern tolilets with a smaller cistern and / or dual flush will not work properly with these devices as they already use less water.

If you do have an older suitable toilet and want to save water, you can also put a brick or an upright ice cream tub or similar in the cistern (so it fills with water but doesn't drain when flushed).
