Sky talk nightmare!

My mum recently changed providers for her home phone and broadband from talk talk to sky, she asked to keep her number, and was told that wasn't a problem etc ( this was in dec) since just before Xmas her phone stopped working all together...about 2 weeks ago she called and asked what was going on etc, they told her it was a back log etc and to wait for a letter which would confirm a date. Once again she said about her old number and was told yes her number was being transferred over. Today, 26th jan she received her bill dated 11th jan! Lo and behold they have changed her number! Called sky there is nothing they can do, she is apparently stuck with this number. She has had this number for over 30 years, and understandably she is upset. Any ideas??
