Someone with authority in your workplace needs to get a grip and end this culture of horseplay before someone gets injured and decides to sue.
Agree. I would think that the right way to deal with this is for the 'victim' to get a new lens and everyone who threw anything to chip in towards the cost.

The OP says though that 2 weeks AFTER that event, the bloke came to him saying his glasses were chipped.

They could have got chipped anywhere! And if it they were chipped through what the OP threw, then why did it take him 2 weeks to mention it?

I think you got most of the answers you need OP although you probably won't like them. The workplace is not a playground, sure you can have fun but you are paid a wage to work and be professional. It's that horseplay that has led to you "posssibly" chipping the glasses but you can't be certain it was or wasn't you because you have put yourself in a position of liability.

Pay up, grow up and use it as a lesson that the workplace is somewhere to work.
  • yes you should pay. culture and wages are irrelevant. You caused the damage

    By the way.

Remember when you threw that packet of crisps across the pub last year & it hit that elderly lady?

Well she has just told me yesterday it resulted in a broken leg & 18 weeks off work.

Its going to be the most expensive packet of Salt & Vinegar you have ever bought.

Do the right thing & pay up. Sell your kids & prostitute your wife. Its going to be expensive.

I don't think the thread is a wind-up - there are some of us who wouldnt know how to wind people up if we wanted to. I can understand why people who have "going in for wind-ups" as a hobby of theirs might think this - but I think the thread is genuine.

There ARE workplaces where such horseplay goes on - I can think of two types of workplace where this is prevalent straight away. One is in the City (in which case O.P. wouldnt be on here anyway - because they earn so much that they wouldnt even blink at the cost of a pair of glasses - even if they were designer ones).

The other one I've heard of - well - I'm wondering if thats where O.P. works and some of the people working for that employer earn so little that they WOULD be concerned about the cost of a pair of glasses.

My mind is still boggling at the thought of anyone working in an environment like that - but then sometimes people do work in workplaces that are outside the norm. I worked for a place once where homeless staff would sleep on the premises/breastfeeding was done in the office/joss sticks were burning/it generally felt much more like a "hippy commune" than a workplace - but had to leave (DARN IT!) because I felt I couldnt rely on my salary being paid promptly each time. Only blinkin' job I actually quite liked going into... - but needs must meant I had to leave...:(

So - more "unconventional" workplaces DO exist - and O.P. is accordingly in this situation.
