Virgin Nightmare!

Options
Hi!
Can anyone offer any advice or help please?!?
I have a virgin credit card with a balance of approx £3,700. I've been paying the minimum for quite a while but not using the card to buy anything.
Last week I got a Barclaycard to do a balance transfer from the Virgin to the Barclaycard but when I tried to do this I realised my card expiry date was out by almost a year! When I contacted Virgin they told me as the account had been 'in-active' for so long, I would have to have another credit check to have a new card issued (Barclaycard won't transfer the balance without an in-date expiry date). Long story short - Virgin have declined to give me another card/expiry date so I'm stuck with a big balance on the card & no way to transfer & pay off.
Any ideas? Can they do this?
Thanks in advance. x

Wheres your new card when the date expired!!!!!!!

    Lost in post
  • They said they don't automatically send new cards out - they wait for the customer to call them when they haven't received their card so they get the opportunity to check contact details etc!!

If Virgin won't send you a new card, then the best approach may be to abandon Barclaycard (and other providers who may also require an active account/card number) and grab an SBT card such as Egg, Post Office, or M&S* and settle the debt that way instead.

    * Via Sterling travellers cheques (1% fee for 10 months 0%)
  • Was declined by Egg even though credit score is 999 (Excellent with Experian) & 444 (Good with Equifax) so unfortunately not an option :(

Jennie, I'm in exactly the same boat as per the other thread on here (and, we posted on the same issue within an hour!)

My issue is with MBNA and they won't give me another card/expiry date. The people on Barclaycards helpline, to be fair to them, are stuck to using a screen that they are given and they have to have the expiry date otherwise the screen won't work. I'm going to ask to speak to a UK person instead and see if they can do something as I think going via the Indian route will prove futile.

This seems ridiculous to me. Barclaycard are quite happy for me to do the transfer otherwise they wouldn't give me the limit that they have!

If I get any info will share here.

Jennie, have a check for the thread I opened. Izool came up with an idea and I've ran with it. You can try it on the Barclaycard website. If you are nervous about doing it (no real reason to be IMO) then I'll update if it works. I'd do it though!

This forum - one of the best IMO. :-)

  • Hi DamInc!
Thanks for the info. I had the same with Barclaycard - only getting through to Indian call centre with no luck. However I had a call back from a UK centre for something else but she said the same thing :(
Just spoken to Virgin again tonight who has given me another number to call within Virgin but she thinks I'll have the same outcome. I think next call is the Ombudsman to see if that'll do any good. Will keep you informed!
  • Have you tried giving barclaycard a fake expiry? So give them one that is valid and see if that works, I dont know if they have a way of checking it's valid, but they are the only company that ask for an expiry.

It's set in MBNA t&c's that cards may not be reissued this could be that they find you a risk or they just don't want your business anymore. I know it's frustrating but they will not budge on the decision.
  • Just tried it & has appeared to have gone through - will see in the next few days! Thanks everyone!x
