Hi

I am going to sell my car to a local ford dealership, however he is asking me to drop off the V5 logbook the day before I sell the car to them?

Is this normal? Just wondered how it works?

As long as you fill in section 9 of the V5 transfer to a motor trader! Make sure they sign and date it and "YOU" send it to the DVLA it will be OK.

Thanks - So I get them to fill in section 9 of the V5 log book, and take the log book back away with me - or do you leave it or part of it with the dealdership?

...So I get them to fill in section 9 of the V5 log book, and take the log book back away with me - or do you leave it or part of it with the dealership?...

You - not the dealer - must detach section 9, fill in your part and get the dealer to sign his part.

You - not the dealer - must take section 9 away with you and you must send it to the DVLA at Swansea.

The dealer keeps the rest of the V5.

If you don't follow these steps, it is technically an offence, and you remain liable for parking tickets and the like.

The DVLA should write to you within a month to confirm they have discharged your liability for the vehicle.

Keep that letter, in case anyone still tries to pull a stroke on you.

The dealer you sell the car to may be respectable, but cars are passed around the trade and there's no telling where it will end up.

If you aren't happy parting with the document prior to the sale, then you don't have to.

If they want to check up on the document, then you can assist them by giving them a copy.
