windows 7 macromedia shock player

Hi all, have always been fairly self sufficient with my pc until my brother-in-law put windows 7 on it!! Don't find it very user friendly! I am trying to download from adobe the macromedia player and it always says it has done it, but isn't working and keeps saying I don't have it installed if I try to use it? If anyone can tell me where I am being stupid I would be very grateful! 
Still looking for the plot...... Anyone seen it???
