Car accident - Albany Assistance/police

Hi all
My car was hit over a month ago, by a driver who was being followed by a police car. As I am not fully comp with my insurance they have passed me on to their 3rd party people, Albany Assistance. I have read a bit about them on the internet, and have turned down the hire car as I am worried I may be liable for costs if the other driver turns out to be uninsured. They sent out a garage to look at my car and decided it will probably be a write off - however the other insurers (whoever they are) may want to send their own engineer out to check this.
The police called the next day with the other drivers details - name, address, and car reg. They gave an address for my insurers to write to so they could request the other partys insurance details.
Albany say they have written to this address twice, they have also done a trace on the car reg and written to the other driver who has not responded. Does anybody have any experience of how long it usually takes for the police to get back with information? Or any other ways I can find out who the insurers are? I have found out myself that the other driver has apparently moved out of the address I have for him, and nobody knows where he has gone...
I was hoping somebody might have been in a similar situation to me and be able to give some advice as to how I can get this sorted quicker!

My bet is that they weren't insured. Then you will need to claim from MIB http://www.mib.org.uk/Submit+a+Claim/en/Default.htm0

I do hope your not a victim of an uninsured Eastern European or Middle Eastern Asian driver?
Because if so it's going to be near impossible to trace them down“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

My first worry was that they would be uninsured - but the person was arrested at the scene by the police - I may be wrong but thought logically the police would have told me at the time if the driver was uninsured? Perhaps not? :-(
I believe that they are actually British - have managed to track down the mother via various means and she is the one who told me that they had moved out and that she would try and find out who the insurers are... but hasn't as yet....0 -
Well at least there's a much greater chance that they're insured“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

What do you mean by followed? Police travelling behind or a pursuit?0 -
The police car had turned off the main road onto our side road in order to follow this car I think - I wasn't actually in the car at the time though as it was parked outside the house so heard a noise then looked out to see the car stopped and the police car behind it. It was quite late at night so I suppose they wouldn't have used sirens anyway even if they were in pursuit...0

As already posted, the Men In Black, sorry, Motor Insurance Bureau will cover uninsured losses.
The accident management firm should advise you of this. Have you signed anything with them? You shouldn't have to pay any fees.0 -
The accident management firm are not the best company I have dealt with to date! I haven't signed anything - they offered a hire care but wanted me to sign a credit agreement which I wasn't sure of. Don't drive too much anyway at the moment, but I really didn't think it would take this long!0
