I'm thinking about getting my first credit card. As I already bank with Natwest I'm looking to go for their World card. I also want to try and get an Amex Gold card as I dont qualify for the Amex BA card. But am I spreading myself too thin as I should only have 1 card to maximise my point gathering?

Credit card is not something you just go and pick what you want.
To be able to do that you need proven track record (otherwise called credit history) upon which the main stream banks can judge you and decide whether you are trustworthy with THEIR money (that is what credit is until the moment you pay).

For the moment completely forget about Amex Gold. You might have some luck with NatWest as they are your bank so they might give you one.

Thanks for the advice. How long will it take to build up a good credit history to get an Amex, a few years?

Once you have three years account history with a diverse array of credit-scored products, i.e. a contract mobile phone, current account with overdraft, and credit card (those three at the bare minimum), ensuring never to pay late or miss payments, you will be in a very strong position to be approved for most any card you apply for assuming the rest of your circumstances show stability.

Good luck with Natwest & credit building! :o

  • Thanks, Ive already had a Natwest current account with overdraft for 4 years and an 02 contract for about 1 1/2 years.

Good, I'd say you stand a very good chance of approval for the Natwest credit card in that case.

Once you've run that for 18~ months or so you should have no trouble whatsoever getting credit elsewhere assuming your accounts have been run responsibly :o
