landline provider help please

moving into a new flat this weekend  which has a bt connection already installed though its not live.
Im currently with onetel  and would rather steer well clear of them.
i have just phoned bt who are asking for a £50 deposit payable by credit/debit card or cheque book none of which i have.
NTL/Telewest are not available in the area.
Does anybody know of another provider who will connect the line? I need to change my landline number also.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Is it a 'new build' - i.e. although you say it 'has a BT connection already', are those just sockets the builder fitted and which have never been used?

    That's the problem then.

Although, as it's been used before, the line is one which can probably be reconnected free of charge, the previous occupant's debt(s) mean the address is tainted with a 'debtor' marker and so subsequant occupants have to suffer that 'money up front' charge.

I know it's unfair but you can see the reasoning - person 1 runs up debts and then gets flatmate to sign up as a 'new customer' - firms don't want to get stung like that repeatedly and so operating a 'deposit' system helps prevent that happening.

Sorry, don't think there's any way round it.

its not the deposit that is an issue its the method of payments they want me to pay with, which is why i was wondering if anyone knew of any other companys that i could go through to get the line connected.

    Sorry, I obviously misunderstood.

If the cheque book thing is the problem, you might find the FSA advice on basic bank accounts useful:
