boiler setting

hi just want to know what number i should set my boiler to, its not a combi boiler and dont know the make of it but it has 1-max on it. I have trv rads with no thermostat on the wall. Would it use more gas to have the boiler set at max and the trv's set at say 3 or the boiler on a low setting and trv's ona high setting? Its all confusing for me, i usually have the boiler on number 4 and the trv in the front room on 3.5 but the rads dont get boiling hot.
I will lose 2 stone by this summer!!!!!!

Generally the hotter the boiler is set to run the better.

Should do, but don't run your radiators so hot you can't bear to touch them.

I suggest you get a room thermometer and use this to calibrate your TRVs to get the desired room temperature say 19-21 Celsius.

I agree it makes more sense to have your boiler turned up high in the winter. Not only will your house warm up quicker, but your pump won't be running for so long and should not wear out as quickly - and will use less electrcity too! Didn't make a noticeable difference on my gas consumption having the temp high or low and it sounds like I have a similar setup to you. Your hot water will probably be hotter too, so be careful with that, and turn the boiler temp down again in the summer when you don't need the heating since you don't need to waste gas making the water unbearably hot.

Unfortunately OP does not have a room stat only TRVs, so the pump will be running continually during the heating period.

Bummer. Those pesky council taxpayers clearly need to pay more during these difficult times.
