Selling shares without certificate

I've got a few hundred pounds worth of shares in a company that I might want to sell - trouble is I can't find a share certificate.
I've still got the receipt/instruction to buy paperwork from the brokers when I bought the shares back in 1998, so I know how many I've got. And I still get sent the annual financial reports so I must still be on the company's register.
I've contacted the company registrars, and they say they can supply a replacement certificate for £75, which is unfortunately a large proportion of the shares' value.
Is there any cheaper way of getting a replacement? Or is it possible to sell the shares without a physical certificate?
Any help appreciated

1 Hope the company has a reorganisation that causes it to reissue its shares or is taken over - in the first case every shareholder will get new shares and in the second one you will eventually get a cheque for the takeover value
2. Find the certificate0 -
i've been stung as well
if the holding is only a few hundred i would just keep the shares
in all honesty considering the cost of a replacement certificate i'm surprised brokers don't send them recorded delivery0 -
Its because the Registrars who issue the shares are the ones who benefit by charging these whopping fees for replacement certificates. They have no interest whatsoever in making sure its delivered safely because they send it at your risk - oh dear, it didn't arrive, that would be 75 quid please!0

If you use the same broker that issued the shares, they may not require the cert. I have had that before, but now have nominee acc. so no longer an issue for me.
Good luck.0 -
Some companies allow you to donate shares. ok you will lose the money, but at least you will be giving to a good cause... and will take the sting out of the tail by not been able to sell the shares your sell.0
