found baby rats

Not sure if this is in the right place, but here goes!!

Was out walking the dogs at the weekend near the beach, and one of them has found a box of baby pet rats

i've brought them home and split the males from the females (7 females, 6 males) and put them in cages with my other ratties ( i wouldnt have picked them up if i didnt already like rats!)

Thing is, i've already got 3 males, and don't really have the space to keep another 13! i've told the kids we can keep 4 males, but i don't know what to do with all the others.

i've tried advertising in the 2 petshops in the town, at the local vets, shop windows, local paper etc, but no takers!!

Anyone got any ideas on how else i can try and rehome them?

please help, cos i don't want the kids getting too attached

Nobody wants pet rats you found in a wood? I don't believe that! i thought they'd be knocking down your door!

    ;)

    Sarcasm mode off.

Can't help but i'm still getting shivers about you bringing home rats; each to their own i suppose.
  • Awwww, the poor things! When I was in my several years of pet rats cycle, I tended to find either the shops were saturated with them, or you had to drive for miles to find one. Did you try the online ads at diamonads or whatever they are called now... I think they were free last time I looked...

Scratch this thread and start another one on the recipes board saying that you've found some baby rats and you're undecided between casseroling them or just going for a straightforward pie. Say also that you've earmarked one for pickling.

They'll all have homes within the hour...

I know people will think I am awfully mean for saying this, but a lot of snake owners would probably want them......

I was actually being completely serious about advertising them for snake owners. Snakes need to eat! And their owners pay good money for rodents.

I know not everyone would like to do this but it was an option

Anyway, as I take it you definately want them to find loving homes and not end up as pet food, you could see if the pet shops wanted them and maybe they'd have more luck shifting them. Went to the pet shop yesterday to pick up food for our lizards and they had an absolutely gorgeous rat there. Everyone seemed interested and was asking when they were getting more rats in. There don't seem to be many for sale around me at the moment, but I'm not sure what it's like where you are
