windscreen chip-how does insurance pay?

But i phoned my insurer (morethan) and they said any repairs for glass are covered by policy and do not affect NCB and do not count as a claim under policy.
Here's another's post who found out about morethan's policy too late:I had a bad experience with morethan. I had my windscreen repair done by one of the companies offering a free repair in april. Two months later when it came to renewing my policy I was shocked to find that it was added as a claim to my policy. I was told by more than it would not affect my NCB with them but other insurers would count this as a claim. I feel cheated as I never made a claim and morethan would not remove this claim even if I reimbursed them with the £71-00 which they have apparently paid to the repairer. Always check with your insurer before the work. IT IS CERTAINLY NOT FREE AND I WISH I HAD PAID FOR IT RATHER THAN GOT IT FOR FREE0 -

This is bad advice.
See this poster who didn't declare a repair, then subsequently got found out and had to pay an increase in premium plus an admin fee:Just to warn everyone else, we recently changed our car insurance to a new company. We didnt realise we had to declare a windscreen chip repair and after amending the policy Hastings Direct want an extra £70! £35 fee for amendment (this is fair enough) but £35 extra because of a 'claim'. I could have had the chip repaired for less!! (considering I had to pay a tenner at the chip repair time too).
I wish I hadnt bothered now as it was such a small innocuous chip. My advice to people now will be dont bother repairing it or pay yourself, otherwise you will be paying and extra £35 (10% for us) for possibly years!0 -
I have taken out insurance on two cars recently and both insurers now charge an excess on windscreen repairs... £20 and £25.0

I just did a check on the LV website and obtained an online quote. I stated that I had made a claim and one of the scenarios listed in the drop down menu was for a windscreen/window related claim. It wasn't specific enough to differentiate between a repair or replacement, but it does appear to show that the advice from some of the posters that it is a claim that needs to be divulged when getting quotes is correct."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

Right i managed to cancel my autoglass appointment. I phoned the CS at morethan and they confirmed that a glass repair does not affect NCB but does class as a claim on the policy and this may affect future premiums and will need to be declared to future insurers as a glass claim. phew thanks Quentin for the advice, as i had no appreciation that this repair will be considered and have to be divulged to others on renewal.0

Most insurance companies allow two 'glass claims' per year before it affects your NCB but as already stated, it still has to be taken into account if you move insurers.
The purpose of the windsceen repair is to fill the chip with resin so that the cracks do not spread further. There isn't always a visual improvement and there is a risk that during the repair, the windscreen will crack anyway. Resin is not as hardwearing as glass and only has a few years life on the surface of the screen. Once a chip has been repaired it can not be repaired again so you are only prolonging the lifespan of a damaged screen.Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !0 -
We had our windcsreen replaced in December using the windscreen part of our car insurance policy. As it said in our paperwork that it wouldn't effect our NCB I didn't think twice about doing it this way as opposed to paying for it ourselves and not getting the insurance company involved. The windscreen cost £205 and insurance company refunded us £125.
Jump forward to now and the policy is up for renewal ... our renewal premium is up from £426 to £588 (a difference of £162). But worse than that, when going on price comparison websites the best quotes we can get are around £1000!!
Current insurance company now have us by the knackers for 5 years.
Very miffed  I wished I'd bloomin' looked on this site for advice when the windscreen cracked. If I had my time again I would NOT have put the claim through the insurance as we will now suffer for that mistake for 5 years.
If this post helps just one pesrson, then I'll be a very happy camper.

Even worse, if you make a claim for windscreen repair, it counts as a claim if you decide/need to cancel the policy, so according to most, if not all, t&c's, no refund of premium is allowed. Even more worse if you claim and need to cancel in the first month.0

i dont know if its changed but 2 years ago i got a chip repaired it wasnt down as a claim at all and the insurer said i didnt have to declare it
dont kow if it was bad advice but the year after when i had to claim for an accident nothing came up about the previous chip claimWhat goes around-comes around0 -
It's a con, simple!
I had a cracked windscreen on a Polo & phoned MoreThan, they gave me the Autoglass number so called them... £470 for a replacement & I'd have to pay my £100 excess.
I called MoreThan back & asked if this would affect my NCB, they said No. I then asked would it be classed as a claim for future insurance quotes & was told Yes....
I phoned round & got it done for £125 by a local (independent) guy!!!!Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0
