Central Heating vs electric fan heaters

Help!

I am a student renting in quite a badly insulated house in Manchester.
In typical student fashion we have arguments about how long the heating is on for..! etc.

However, a couple of my housemates have bought fan heaters to heat up their rooms?!?!

I'm saying, well instead of that, we can just turn on the heating a bit more so that we don't have to use the heaters, as it will be much cheaper and we can all reap the benefit of warmth

But they are adamant that using their heaters is cheaper..

First of all, I instinctively know that they're wrong but I can't actually give decisive evidence of this, so I was wondering if somebody here could help me find a way to make them see sense..??

(also, how bloody selfish that the rest of us have to freeze while they are all cozy with their heaters)
