Web Hosting

I am almost at the point with my web site (regional football supporters group site)that I can look to putting it on the internet and wondered if anyone can help with the following questions.....

1. When looking for hosting company what are the things I should be looking for?

2. Some of the companies are offering layered hosting saying they will automatically upgrade you once you use your allowances. Is this normal and is it safe or will they oversell just to get more out of you?

3. What are the things I should avoid also as I do not wish to make a mistake that will cost a fortune as the site is not going to generate an income so keeping costs down is key

I thank you in advance for taking time out of your day to read this and a huge thank you to everyone who is able to offer advice.

I used 1and1 for DONKIES and never had much of a problem. I still use them for Domain Names, But I moved to a Virtual Private Server which has a 25gb storage limit and 500gb bandwidth limit (along with 1IP and 512 dedicated RAM on a i7 server) for £3.5 a month.

There a thousands of hosting companies out there and I can't say I can recommend any as I have only used 2 of them (3 including geocities). But I can say for 1and1 I've never had a problem and the UI is very easy to navigate and resonable prices too. Its £2.49 a month for "unlimited" bandwidth + 10gb storage.

    http://www.gbbo.co.uk/

i used this to set my own website up, didnt cost a jellybean and in 2 years i can go somewhere else no cost no penalties no probs no fuss

  • I too have used www.1and1.co.uk for the best part of 11 years now. They've upped their bandwidth use to unlimited (although how unlimited that REALLY is I haven't checked it deep enough).

Never had a single issue with them, easy to use admin panel for setting up e-mail accounts, decent webmail, plenty of options. Fast servers, no complaints.

They might not be the cheapest hosts in the whole world, but I haven't ever had to contact them in around 5 or 6 years.:)

Same, been with them years and years and never had to contact them about anything. So I can't rate their customer service or troubleshooting but the stability I got was brilliant.
  • I have already registered my own domain name and self built site and wish to use that rather than the wysiwyg instant site builders.

That's fine, I don't use WYSIWYG either with 1and1. I just FTP/upload my HTML to their server and bang, job done. :D

You can even use DNS repointing to point your domain name to their webservers as well should you wish.

Sorry did not make my last post clearer. that was in reply to the post about "Getting British Business Online" with 2 years free. good idea though it is it looks like a wysiwyg web in a box type and that would not do. 1and1 look good, am just reading details on the site now thanks.
