ikea kitchen drawers

Can someone tell me if the ikea kitchen drawers have a back in them or if the drawers go right back to the wall when closed or is there a gap at the back. I have a gas pipe that sits on the wall where they are going, so will not be able to push them right up. Thanks in advance.

All Ikea units have backs and go right back to the wall. If you have a pipe that cannot be moved to run at floor level then you would need to either cut away a bit of the unit somehow, or leave the back off and cut the sides if required.
However you cannot do this so easily with a unit with drawers in it as the drawers themselves go almost right back, leaving a space of 50mm at the most ,so , unless it is a fairly small pipe fitted tight to the wall , the drawers might not close properly. You will need to measure carefully.0 -
jennifernil, thanks for the reply.
I think we might be alright then, as the pipe is flush to the wall and about 20mm in diameter. :beer:0 -
P.S. We have an Ikea drawer unit (and loads of other units) in our study (yes they are not only good in kitchens!!) right next to our computer, so I could get OH to measure the drawers precisely if it would help.0

Our posts crossed! How does your pipe run? Vertical or horizontal? Remember a backless unit will let in more dust.
I think getting OH to check the measurements would be a good idea, I would hate for you to buy the units on my advice and find they did not fit!!! Have you looked at them in your Ikea store?
The quality is very good value for money, so I think you have made a good choice. Which doors are you going for?0 -

I'd consider fitting the white hardboard back directly to the wall then, just for the better aesthetics than having a cut through the middle, although you won't see much of it anyway with a drawer unit.
Couple of drilled holes in the base / top back rail and you should be fine0 -

The pipe runs vertical 810mm from floor and 20mm proud from wall if you could get OH to measure that would be a great help. the doors were after are the white/yellow or yellow/white stat

Hadn't thought of doing that, will consider it if we cant get the drawers in properly.0 -
I have Ikea kitchen units. There is just over 2" or 50 mm free space behind the drawers.
HTHThe quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0 -
I have just done this job for my friend. He asked me to fit his kitchen with him. The draw units do have a back and there is a small gap behind the draws within the unit but none behind the unit as they fit tight to the wall.
The kitchen I did was a smallish kitchen and we ended up having to fit the gas hob over the draw unit which must be fed by a solid pipe. The old bulky metal pipe would have been a problem, but running a new 15mm pipe meant we were ok. Whilst we were at that stage we had the worktop off some of the time so I could close the draw and see exactly what was going on. I dont remember the exact gap but it required some fancy bending so that the pipe ran really tight to the back of the drawers in the unit and we also had to cut away some of the cross member on the top of the unit. Also I had to cut a groove in the worktop to allow the connection to the hob in this position.
It is much easier to fit this pipe to the hob first and then when you place the hob in place and all the draws out you can make a join at a nice convenient height within the unit.
Hope this helps you.0 -
All good advice. I think you would need to leave the back off, maybe try to fix it to the wall like real said, that would cover a possibly untidy wall. If the pipe is only 20mm proud of the wall it should be OK, as Mr Proctalgia said, there is 50mm free space behind the drawers when pushed fully in.
Once you have assembled the unit, without back, offer it up and mark where you will need to cut the base to fit round the pipe. Do you have other units either side? If so, put these in place at the same time. The back helps with the squareness of the unit so fix the other ones to the drawer unit before screwing it to the wall to ensure it is square.
As happy hero said, you may also have to cut away some of the top rear cross member.
Is this a hob you are fitting above the drawers? If so then I think you may have to not use the top drawer box, rather just fix the front in place with a couple of brackets screwed to the sides of the unit , or a couple of clips. Depends on the thickness of the worktop and the hob. We have a "false" drawer front below our electric hob.0 -
Thank for all the advice and help,
There is nothing going on top of the drawers, the pipe is from where the old cooker used to be, we moved the cooker a little way along the wall by runnig the pipe down to the floor and using the space were the plaster doesn't touch the floor. I'd set my heart on this kithen and was dreading the thought of trying to find a different one. All i have to do now is order, pay, deliver and fit cant wait. :j Wish me luck.0
