Places to stay in UK with a dog?

I know I can google but I am looking for some personal recommendations from people who actually have been themselves to "so and so" ....

:)

I am looking for somewhere that is a reasonable traveling distance from London by public transport, meaning train as coach would not take my GS on board (I do not drive), somewhere nice and quiet with nice walks/woods/lake etc close by but also comfortable and of reasonable standard. For a long weekend perhaps.

Can anyone recommend anywhere?

Thanks a lot

We always take our two - by train - to the North Wales Haven sites. We've found the best one to be the Presthaven Sands as there are miles of beach and dunes to run up and down (and up and down :p). Train takes about 2.5 - 3 hours then a short taxi journey from the station.

We pay £20 per dog for a 4 night stay - and always book using the sun vouchers/codes so for 2 two-legged and 2 four-legged it costs us about £100 for 4 nights (mon-fri) plus travel. They do 3 night weekend breaks too but I'm not sure what the difference in price is.

We don't really do the 'entertainment complex' side of the holidays and use them mainly as a relaxing break - but as neither of us drive either it's nice to have some entertainment available rather than being in a country cottage with no public transport and no shops, people or a pub for miles :D

I've taken mine to a Centerparc before. There's one in Wiltshere and one in Suffolk but I don't know if either of those would be convenient.

It is a little on the expensive side I think but if you book off-season the price is a little fairer and you're also a little less likely to encounter children if you're looking for quiet (no offence to those with children but a lot of them in one place rarely equals quiet in my experience :D). As it is a Centreparc it has that log cabin in the woods vibe to it and so there is (how much depends on the park) lakes, forests, walking trails and everything else.

I've stayed at the one in Wiltshere before for five days and very much enjoyed it although I will point out that most of the water areas were reserved for different activities.

I always thought you couldn't take dogs when using the Sun vouchers?

We always use Sun voucher hols when we want to take the mutt with us.

We have had some great breaks and they only charge £20 extra for the dog. I just make sure its a dog friendly site, then I ring up after I have booked and add the dog. Never had a problem and have been doing this for 6 years now.

Us too - once we get our confirmation through from Haven we just ring them up and add the dogs on (and take the linen off :p). Last year we unexpectedly had to add our 2nd dog on the day before we travelled and it was no problem.

I'm reading this with interest. Something we are considering in the future here is offering B &B to guests with dogs and/or horses...who fancy trying new walks/rides with their own companion. The sticking point is that we have pets of our own, and are not sure how dogs but mostly the cats would feel about regular doggy visitors.

edit: is this any use? http://www.dogfriendlybritain.co.uk/

Have a look in say the New Forest area - thats not too bad a journey for you. Or Brighton/Eastbourne?

    This looks nice?

My parents own a livery yard and have two attached cottages which they rent out and allow dogs. They also have horses, cats and dogs and the horses and cats aren't bothered by the visitors but the dogs - esp. the puppies - can get a bit barky if the guest dogs are barky. They have had to put up a few extra fences to keep some seperation and to ensure visiting dogs don't get too curious about the horses.

How it would work in your own home I wouldn't know but you could look into seperate entrances?

Wow. I'll certainly use the vouchers in future then. Are they running the promotion in the Sun at the moment? I'm sure the vouchers in the Daily Mail said no dogs allowed, too, but maybe if you ring the centre direct they can check if the dogs can come with you.

I'd much rather have the dogs with us.
