Do they have UK driving licences? It doesn't matter where they live - you can add as many named drivers as you want. They do not have to ever drive the car.0 -
They do not live in UK, never did
My daughter's boyfriend is from Poland, he has a Polish licence - that is nto a problem as he can use this or convert to UK licence.
Bou we do nto have anyone that we could put as other drivers for insurance.
Also, want to keep it simple, insure for the 2 of them.
Still have no idea about what car - I gues I would like a make/model/year with a link LOL
I am REALLY THAT cluless0 -
Ok my advise would be comparison sites in conjunction with cashback such as Quidco.
The lowest cover you can get is Third Party (not Third Party Fire and Theft but just third party) However the price of this is often more than fully comprehensive for some bizarre reason, so always check both.
Insurance for everyone his risen a lot of the last year even drivers with many years no claims are being hammered with price rises.
Insurance for your daughter will be based on her age (young so more risk), experience (none so no reduction), engine size of car, (lower the better usually) and area car will be in.
Garaging the car will also reduce costs if you can do it but most people can't
A large excess would also reduce her premiums but would mean a large payment in event of a crash to get her car fixed.
You may also consider a restricted mileage policy where you agree to doing only a certain amount of miles per year.
Where the insurance company fit a GPS tracker in your car which records how many miles you do and as long as you stick to the agreed limit, you get may get charged less than normal policies. If freedom is outlawed, only outlaws will have freedom.0 -
Small cars are not always the cheapest cars to insure for younger drivers. Certain small cars (especially Corsas and Saxos) attract high premiums because of the driver profiles that often buy them.
I would not be surprised if an old, small-engined Focus or even Mondeo sized car is no more expensive to insure -- and these cars are both cheaper to buy and safer in an accident.
Something with a "grandad" image -- Citroen Xsara, Korean cars, old Toyotas etc can sometimes attract lower premiums due to the fact that the boy/girl racers won't touch them. As the insurance is likely to be the most expensive part of the purchase in the next couple of years, it's worth looking into all the options. Nothing stopping you running a dozen hypothetical scenarios through confused.com.0 -

You may not find anyone that will insure a 22 year old on a Polish driving licence, who has been driving for 18 months.
If he is resident, he can only drive on it in the UK for 3 years as well. If he is not resident, again, no insurer will be happy to quote for any fair price.
Easier to get a uk licence.0 -
Thanks - he can swap his Polish license for UK one no problem.
They are thinking of getting a car Aprli-is so got a bit of time.
Thanks for all the replies/pointers, all very much appreciated.0 -
my bf and myself are young drivers (early 20s); each with our own car. we live in an area that's a bit 'dodgy', so premiums are higher compared to where my parents live in wales.
you have asked a few times about which car to buy....for me, insurance dictated the car i bought. it may seem funny, but group 1 cars may not give you a lower premium vs. group 3 cars.
as a starting point, i'd choose the ford ka 1.3 (my car!). you can easily afford a decent one for £1500 (probably an 03/53 reg, 50k/60k miles). try here: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/FORD+KA/N-240-4294967050-4294966391,Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236/search.action?tabClick=Y
enter your postcode and find a registration number in your area. then go on a price comparison website. try comprehensive and 3rd party options (fully comp will probably be cheaper though). also, put your daughter as the main driver and her bf as an added named driver (and vice versa - to work out which one works out cheaper).
if you get the cheapest result with elephant or admiral, click through to go on their website. from there, you can select the '10 month bonus accelerator' option - that will knock off a few hundred pounds. if, on the other hand, the results that come up are disappointing, then go on direct line's website. they normally offer competitive rates, but atm they have 12 months' car insurance for the price of 10. they did this offer about 2 years ago and my bf found them the cheapest at that time. since then, i think they've had offers like 8 weeks free car insurance (not as good as the current promotion). when getting quotes with direct line, do the same with swapping the main/named drivers over.
please let me know how you get along with the results you get. try the above and get back to us with your prices.....:grouphug:Official MSE canny forumite and HUKD VIP badge member
