Faulty Pre-Owned Laptop - Can you help?

Hi there,

I am not very good with any of this stuff and I wondered if anyone could tell me the answer....
I bought a pre-owned laptop from pcworld on the 9th October 2010 and it had worked fine until now. It wont start up at all and does not even start windows. It just sticks on the start screen. What would be my rights with PC World? I have the reciept which states the sale and it's pre owned, am I within my rights to ask them to fix it without being fobbed off its pre-owned or i need to send to Advent (can I demand PC World fix it as the sale was with them?) or another excuse as I have had problems with returning items to them in the past and would like to be armed this time with my legal rights.
Thanks in advance if you can help me or make some suggestions.

Sam

    Advent ARE PcWorld's own brand.

Also doesn't matter, so long as the receipt states less then one year it comes with exactly the same as a brand new system (in terms of warranty)

Either phone the Helpline and they will arrange for it to be picked up by a courier (Now called KnowHow) and will also give you a day it will be returned, or go into the store (will take a few days longer)

    *Edit*
Is it just not going into windows at all, If its a laptop and not a desktop try tapping F8 as soon as the system turns on and select repair computer. It might be nothing more then a Software / OS problem.

    **Edit**
If it just sticks on the Advent splash screen try removing the battery and power cord, press the power button down for 10 seconds, then plug in the battery/psu and try turning it on again.
  • why not just RE-INSTALL your operating system,

    bet that fixes it

No doubt it will but you shouldnt have to for a 4 month old laptop this is PC Worlds problem, you are well within your rights to return.

yeah but theres every chance a fresh install would be quicker anyway than sendin it away and such,

also how much spyware has the OP picked up of there own accord viruses etc etc ?

id be tryin to boot into SAFE MODE and do this myself, but hey thats just me id rarther things be fixed sooner rather than later

Well if it sticks at the spash screen and never gets to POST then I highly doubt its a OS problem.

And The warranty is hardware only, it doesn't cover issues such as viruses which can remove the mbr or consumers messing around with the OS files...

Good way to think of it as a Toaster, The toaster is the hardware and the toast is the software. You'd look pretty strange trying to return the toaster because the bread you used is out of date.

It doesn't matter when it was purchased but as soon as the consumer starts making changes to the OS then its not the manufacters fault if its a software issue.

Plus Reinstalling the OS is easy TheTechGuys step by step for Advents on Windows 7

Just make sure your backups are up to date for your data - docs/photos/music/email etc.
If you reinstall your OS as has been suggested, or return it to PCW for repair (who will do the same), you will lose everything that is on there.

ahh good point however you said yourself its highly unlikely its an OS problem. Definately worth re-installing the OS and if that doesnt work then that rules out all software issues right?

That is one of those "after the horse has bolted" things...
