Plastering and dampness on concrete floor

Hi,

We have just had our whole house reskimmed and as such there is a huge amounts of moisture in the air.

We are suffering from a damp patch in the corner of our kitchen on the exposed concrete floor.

There was no issue before we had the plastering done.

The outside wall seems dry so I have a theory. Could it be that as this is the most exposed corner of the house the damp patch is simply condensation as the damp air hits the cold concrete slab?

Any plasterers noticed damp corners of rooms after reskimming a house?

Cheers Dave

  • SOME AREAS DRY FASTER THAN THE OTHERS.. IT DEPENDS ON THICKNES, TEMPERATURE , how dry the wall was in the first place etc..it will take some time to dry... 7 to about 15 days roughly

unlikely the plasterer to be the cause of damp, but most of what you describe sound to me just like the moiest the plaster releases as it dries

don't really understand this you sort of say it isn't the plaster but it sounds like it is the plaster?

    How best to explain this...

the plastering wont cause "damp" - but the moisture being released as it dries could cause some temporary dampness on cold surfaces. "damp" is something that is caused by ingress of water or moisture into the building fabric, not a surface condition which will go away once the source of the moisture is removed.

    Is the plaster fully dried?

No the plaster is still very wet. There is a lot of moisture in the air and this damp patch on the floor is growing. The floor is very dusty and you can basicaly see it what looks like getting cleaner from the corner out.

It isn't wringing wet but is damp. I am hoping this is just the moisture leaving the plaster entering the air hitting the concreat floor next to the external wall where it is cold and condencing.

    Could this be the case?

Happy to be patient just don't want it to be penetrating damp! The house is old no cavity just a cold brick wall behind the plaster! Just hope b&Q will let me move the install and delivery dates for the kitchen which are supposed to be in about 10 days!! As I need to make sure the walls are dry before painting. The kitchen was a very thick coat and was done over a month ago. The problem has only appeared when the rest of the house has been skimmed and the radiators are off.

Sadly the only way we can afford the kitchen is via b&q 0% finance so will have to stick with their fitters :-(

I have my tub of trade supermat ready to do my wash coat. WAs going to do the wash coat over the whole kitchen even where it is getting tiled to seal the plaster.

    Don't worry I won't go near PVA :-)

    Cheers

P.S. Once I have done one or two wash coats with the supermat and allowed it to dry can I then paint with a dulux kitchen paint?
  • You have to let the plaster dry out before you put any form of impermeable paint on otherwise the remainder of the water trying to escape from the plaster will push the paint off. I would leave it for a couple of months, especially in this weather.
