Van NCB transfer to a car?

A family member has 9 years no claims on his van insurance (fully comp) and is getting a car to replace the van, his insurance company says he cannot transfer the no claims to a car policy which of course he's non to chuffed about!
Anyone know of an insurer who will take a van insurance policie's NCB into account for a new car policy?
Thanks for any ideas!

If the van insurance policy was in his name, and not a company for example, then I don't see why the NCB can't be transferred to a new policy. The renewal notice should state his NCB entitlement, which is all other insurers require as evidence.

Yeah the policy is in his name and although he had a van it was only ever used for personal use and not business use.
Thanks for replies !

I too will soon be in this situation, VW transporter (personal use) with 4 years no claims, now looking to get a car in the next 2 too 3 months, taking the 4 years ncb out of my quotes added an extra £200
so hopfully i should be ok

Side note, I found for my own insurance adding my parents to my my policy reduced the cost by about £70 - I'm 40, 9+ ncd and they're 67 and 72 so worth adding them if it's an option even if they never drive your car!

Searching online doesn't really help except find other people in the same boat- reading policies online mention NCD transferred from other 'motor car' policies so I'm guess that's not vans? as they're commercial vehicles even if used only for personal usage.
CoOp may be an option, will call to confirm if they will or won't accept van NCD.

Mate found the same, He could transfer his car policy to a van on a trade policy but now he wants to reverse
that they wont allow the noclaims to be transferred to a car.
In the end he insured his car through his wife which turned out cheaper anyway.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
