but cant remember much about it,there is a thread
"how often do you back up"
programmes and files etc; i want to back up everything i have installed till this day so if my comp nacks some-how i can put my back-up disc in

  • Do you have this already?

If not, Norton Ghost, Acronis Trueimage are the best ones..

This is the nearest free equivalent..

havnt got either just nero back it up thats all it says
when i go to start-all programes-nero=data and then click back it up
it asks what i want to back up,(i.e) programes+files or hard drive
i want to back up so if my comp goes wrong some-how
i will have everything i have installed saved on to a disc

I use Nero backitup, though personally I only use it to back up data. This means my weekly backup fits neatly onto a single rewritable dvd. I have 3 disks which I rotate weekly so I always have 3 backup versions to hand.

For me the process was basically to sit down and work out which directories I needed to back up. I came up with 3 categories:

    1. Things I didn't need to back up at all - e.g. programs - these can always be downloaded / reinstalled.

    2. Things which I only needed to back up once - e.g. my music collection / videos.

    3. Things which I needed to back up regularly:
e.g. My firefox profile, My thunderbird profile, My desktop, Documents etc.

So its only the files in category 3 (i.e. my data) which I need to back up regularly.

It means that my backup process is simple enough that I actually do it (most weeks anyway), which is the main thing.
