Recomend me a new Hard Drive

I'm looking for a new hard drive for my pc, I have over 200gb storage already so it dont have to be big, enough room for xp and running programs. I want something reliable and quiet. (I am running a 120 gb at the mo and its starting to get slow and noisey) so I need to replace it befor it gives up on me.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to buy one too.

Thanks in advance

I tend to go either Western Digital or Seagate.

I've had too many Maxtor drives fail on me in the past.

http://www.redstore.com are usually good on price too

Are you sure the hdd is not extremely fragmented which can cause a slow down. It's probably also clogged up with temp files, huge cache from internet stuff. The partition with windows on it isn't low on space? I've had mine with only a few GB to spare and it slows down a fair amount as it's reconfiguring/reducing/expanding the pagefile.

On another note if storage is a little concern and you want something to back up to PC world have a special on at the moment for an external Seagate 320GB hdd for £80 (I'm getting one tonight).

Its a 120 gb and I have 84 of it free, also I defrag on a regular basis. it's been getting slower and noisier over the last 6 months. I'm not getting any errors at the moment but dont want to wait until I do.

Thanks for the recomendations, I will have a good look into them.

If you want noise-free then the samsung spinpoint series has to be the one to get. Its currently the quiet drive of choice at silent pc review.

I've just replaced my ageing seagate barracuda with the 300gb model, and it does the job nicely (and quietly!).

I've never used the samsung but they do seem to be popular among quiet pc builders. See here.

I've owned all the hard drives listed above and the Samsung is nice and quiet.

For those that didn't know ...
Maxtor is now part of the Seagate family of brands and products. Maxtor products gain the advantages of acclaimed Seagate world-class manufacturing and operations. DiamondMax 20 and DiamondMax 21 drives now reap the benefits of Seagate technical and product design leadership.
However the Maxtors carry a 3-year warranty whereas the Seagates have 5 years.

    Seagate spec
    Maxtor spec

I have one of the new Maxtor DiamondMax 21 (320gb) and it's running quietly and cool too.

(To sum up - try a Samsung (for quiet) and Seagate (for reliable/long warranty) :))
