JSA Processing Target

I made a telephone claim for JSA on behalf of my son on 10th Jan, and he went in to the jobcentre on 13th for his initial interview.

He had his first signing yesterday.

When checking progress yesterday, I was informed that today would be the 12th working day, and at that point, they could then send an email to chase progress. if the claim was going to be delayed, I was advised they could look at an interim payment.

I phone late this afternoon, to be told, that his JSA1 was received to the BDC yesterday, so that's when the 12 days starts.

Can anyone confirm which is correct?

Also, as I act as my son's appointee, I have to go with him, and do the signing.
In 6 weeks, I will be available on my son's signing day, as I will be doing some voluntary work myself, I was told, not to worry, he will just be excused for that week. It sounds too simple (?)
I'm just worried in case I'm misinformed and he ends with a sanction.
Any thoughts?

Can you clarify a few points please when you made the claim did you call the contact centre and they took the whole statement off you and you just signed the copy or did you have a clerical claim? JSA1 sounds like a clerical claim
There are several targets to meet, they made the first one because you were booked within 3 days of the original call and it's normally 10 working days to process the claim.

If you have to go with your son to his signing how will he manage to go to a job interview? To claim JSA you have to be fit and able to work so will he be able to manage this without you?
I don't see how they excuse him signing if you aren't with him.
  • I agree with Busy mom. I can't understand how your son can be in receipt of JSA if he is unable to deal with his affairs himself.

When I phoned the call centre, I went through everything with them, and then they gave me the option of having a copy of the claim sent to me, to be signed and taken with us to the interview at the Jobcentre, or go to the jobcentre and sign it all there. So I opted for the latter. At the interview we saw 2 people, the first part was done clerically, as the computer was not working, for the section that person was doing, but she would then go upstairs and input it.

As my son's appointee, I was told that I have to sign for him, as it's me that is making the declaration.
Being autistic, he has problems with the comprehension, and use of language and understanding it it in written form. But, he wants to work and has spent 3 years training in plastering and brickwork. Whether he is able to get a job, and hold it down will be another matter.
He is physically able to work, so why should his disability prevent him from doing this?

  • i have dealt with many customers on JSA who also have a standing agent or appointee
You can't beat an egg.........................NO WAIT!
  • Im guessing the 12 days start from when they receive the claim seeing as they can do very little before then.

My guess is that he would be paid on the 11 Feb unless you chase the claim up in say a week and get an interim payment seeing as they owe him from the date of claim minus 3 days (if they still have waiting days) up to that first signing

I say a week because that would hopefully give them some time to process the claim if it is straight forward

  • Processing target is exactly what it says - a target time for the claim to be processed by. It does not stop the BDC from processing the claim earlier if the customer is in urgent need and has passed his normal payday. As his first signing was 25/1/11 he would be due to be paid JSA into his bank 28/1/11. You are within your rights to ask for an emergency payment of JSA due for that date. If you get no joy ask to speak to a supervisor.

As regards you being unable to sign on with your son - get their advice in writing about this before the event then you have something to fall back on if the claim gets stopped
