I had a minor bump in the car park at work recently, I reversed into a collegues 1970's Lotus Elan. I touched the front chrome bumper of his car with the plastic bumper of my Mazda 6, this cause a minor chip to his paintwork. I decided not to tell my insurance company to protect my excess, thinking the cost would be much less and we agreed to settle privately. Subsequently he has had a quote from a Lotus dealer for spraying the whole front of his car costing £800 and he now expects me to pay this. Mobile repairers are able to touch up this minor damage for about £80, how can I convince him to go this way?

You probably will be better off reporting the incident to your insurer and letting them deal with it. (You breach your policy conditions by not doing so)

(You won't have to pay your excess at all, and if you want to preserve your NCD you can always reimburse your insurer (if it's cost effective to do so).
