Last year, I joined the AA via the internet at a special rate of £11.67 for newbies.
This years quote came in at £19.30. So I rang their Freephone number and said "Its gone up £8 per month, can you do anything ?"
Within a minute, the nice lady came back with a discounted £12.54.
