DLA Reapplying

I am currently waiting for my response to my DLA application, I was on the low rate care and the high rate mobility. I was just wondering if anyone knew that if you need to be assesed by a doctor can you refer them to who you see at the hospital.

I have a condition called Ankylosing Spondilitis and it affects my joints, mainly my hips and spine. I basically cannot put on my own socks, tie my laces, can't wash or dry below my knee level, or say if i was to drop some money i'd be screwed haha. I am always very stiff but I am not always in pain, I have my good days and my bad days. I sometimes don't know whether i'm disabled or not, it may sound strange but i'm sort of stuck in the middle or thats how I feel. I feel like "normal" people class me as disabled as when im shopping i always have people asking have you hurt your back or why are you limping, i dont go into detail i just say ive pulled a muscle usually. But then i see people who are worse off than me and feel like I shouldn't be applying for DLA.

I would love to have a great job but my condition always seems to get in the way, if i rest for too long like an office job i stiffen up and have to wait 10 or 15 mins till i feel better. And if i had a job on my feet all day my back would ache. I've been applying for jobs lately but i don't know wether to say im disabled or not, as some people would class me as either.

I have a feeling I'm going to get refused also, but if i do is there anything I can do as the thing I miss most is my badge, as because my condition affects my hips, when I get out of my car I have to open the door fully and twist my whole body, which I cannot do in a normal space. I worry alot and that is why I didn't get my renewal in on time as I was worried I wouldn't get re awarded due to the new government.

I am also afraid if I was to get a job i would be told you cant be disabled if you can work. Sometimes I do things because they have to be done even if I am in pain. So if I got a job and was working through the pain that shouldnt go against you should it.

I don't know wether any of this is relevant to this forum haha but just wanted to share my thoughts. please feel free to leave your oppinions on my situation.

Hi, I have just had my renewal approved on the same rates as before. They did not contact anyone about my claim and used my form, prescription list and care plan as evidence. Things often do go smoothly so try not to worry. I hope you get a favourable decision soon.

Many people work and are disabled - hence access to work and the disability premiums within working tax credits.

  • It would seem to be a lot easier to get your claim renewed, with the same award as before, than to start a fresh claim. So many people are getting their first or new claims refused - almost automatically it seems. So an appeal is necessary.
    I hope you are successful.
  • I do hope you application goes smoothly. Also do not worry about working too. Many people with diabilities work and want to work.

DLA is available if you work or not. That is the beauty of it. Many people are able to work because of the care and mobility DLA gives them.

The letter from DLA states: "DLA is paid to help you live an independent life. It does not matter if you are in work or training while you are claiming".
