My son's windscreen has been smashed and his insurance (tesco value) doesn't cover it.

Please could anyone give me a rough idea of what he should expect to pay for a new windscreen, I've looked on various websites but they all want details so that they can ring back with a quote and make an appointment.

He lives in Bristol by the way, so if anyone can recommend a windscreen fitter it would be very helpful.

Many thanks.

Look in yellow pages, and avoid autoglass, I think there's one called nationwide which are cheap.

    Is it driveable?

Ask at your local garage, they usually have a regular contract windscreen fitter to fit screens for them at sensible prices.

As abov steer clear of national chains and talk the smaller guys.

If near Glasgow/Kilmarnock I can give you a couple of names.

Edit:- Above offer totally useless sine you are in Bristol :)

Have a look in Autotrader/Adtrader/Gumtree locally for guys that advertise all the time and get a quote.

I'll second getting amongst the Yellow pages for a decent local indy fitter.

The price will depend on the year the car was made and whether or not it has any extras fitted, like auto-wipers or if it's the new panoramic screen.

I had a new windscreen fitted in my 03 reg astra, was a clear glass with blue tint sunvisor in the glass, that cost £110 fitted on my door step, ill try find the number as they were a national company and were £400 LESS than Autoglass lol

National Windscreens fitted mine yestarday- badly timed stone from a lorry. Was on insurance, so unsure about costs, trying to remember the sales bumph in the waiting room, don't recall their prices being too bad.
  • should be pretty cheap if its a new astra the newer the car the cheaper the window unless its a heated one

    i had a windscreen put in a audi a4 for £130 yet a quote for a 1989 vauxhall nova was around £530

if its a new car they are more mass produced therefore cheaper

Many thanks for all replies. National windscreens have quoted £100 + vat which sounds reasonable and car is booked in for tomorrow.

Autoglass was about 3 times this despite being a non insurance job! Thanks for the warnings, would probably have used Autoglass as it's the first name that comes to mind.
