Bank Overdraft error

Hi, to cut a long story short i brought a series of purchases over ebay using paypal, and accidently paid through the wrong account (i was at my overdraft limit). I phoned to stop the payments being made but they said the only thing they could do was to increase the overdraft to cover the payments.
However instead of increasing the overdraft (via phone) to £1450 they set the overdraft to £450!!
Consequently all the payments have been rejected, aswell as other direct debits. My ebay rating might take a real hit because of this, so may not be able to use this again.
I got a letter through detailing the charges (£38 for each returned item, and £200+ because i was way over the £450 mark).
This problem only came to light after I phoned to complain about the extortionat charges. But this could have been very serious if I relied on that account and was in a difficult situation.
Do you think i've got a case for compensation? will this still affect the interest they're charging me? (ps the charges have been credited back to my account but not until friday).
Thanks

Sorry, as this is your first post, but absolutely not - on the compensation question
The Bank could equally point to your contributory negligence - in committing funds initially which you didn't have. In attempting to help (after you tried to stop the payments - hence your Ebay sellers would have been aware in any event?) - they clearly didn't. But it's a course of action you started, so they're unlikely to contemplate compensation over and above refunding the charges incurred.
But you do have a case for online Banking - as you would have spotted the problem much earlier? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
