Question about returning to work after being on ESA

Hi
I have a question on behalf of my son about returning to work after being on ESA.
Briefly, my 22 year old son (still living at home with us) was awarded contributory based and income related ESA following a major accident last August in which he suffered serious brain injury. Having now confounded his doctors predictions he has been certified as fit to return to work, which he is overjoyed about as this is another step towards 'normality' for him.
Before his accident he was working on a part-time, casual basis - no contracted hours as such, just working as and when shifts were available for him (averaging 20 to 30 hours per week). His position has been kept open for him and he had his first shift back there yesterday.
He has, obviously, informed the ESA people that he was returning to work (and has sent them his GP certificate which stated that he is fit to return to work on shorter hours for the first week) so he is not expecting to receive any more ESA payments. He will receive his first pay from his job on the 8th February but this will only be for about 12 hours work (at minimum wage) he then won't receive another payment until his next payday on the 8th March.
Does anyone know if there is any help available to him to tide him over this first month. We help him out as much as we can, but we're on a very tight budget ourselves and can't lend him much.
Many thanks
