i want to get either a freeview recorder (even though i have freeview built into my TV) or a dvd recorder.
is one better than the other? or are they just the same but do different things?

A dvd recorder will record onto blank dvd disks that you will need to buy, typically about 4.7GB capacity, but a freeview recorder will record to an internal hard drive much like a computer, many around 250GB.
A hard drive recorder holds a lot more, and is easier to use. I would only use a DVD recorder if you want to keep recordings for a long time, or move them between different places.
The other thing creeping in now is freeview HD recorders.
  • A freeview recorder normally will have a built in hard drive, which to an extent has a finite capacity. Obviously it depends if the stuff you record, you want to keep long term or just watch once becaue you missed it.

If it is the latter then you would be better off with a freeview recorder. The recorder either overwrites or requires deletion of older programs to continue recording. However if you want to keep the programs to watch on a repeat basis, then the DVD recorder would probably be a better option

Well a Freeview recorder will be more versatile and twin tuner models will allow you to record two programmes at one time. Different models have different features.

You can compare the features of each model side by side on this web page, and if you want HD click on the relevant box at the top.

Pansonic, Humax and Topfield are the most popular and seem to be the most reliable makes

I have a dvd recorder (with hard drive) and a PVR in my living room. I find that if I want to record a programme I nearly always use the PVR... it's just so simple and so quick.
The dvd recorder keeps on giving me options and asking me questions and takes a long time to load up. It may just be the DVD Recorder that I have but for me its PVR almost every time.
If I want to record TV I tend to use my PC
I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
