HELP!!! Access Denied whilst trying to access HD (from caddy)

PC stopped working and found that I needed new graphics card. Panicked that HD had packed in (with all my photos!) so bought a caddy for HD, which I have put in. Plugged it into my laptop, but can't view one users file (mine!).
Go into documents and settings, which then shows 3 users - all users, my husband and me. I can look in and access the other 2 folders, but when I access mine the folders are there but when I click on my documents (or any other folders) it says "my documents is not accessible, access denied".
Help!! Any advice would be very gratefully received. I want to transfer all my photos to my laptop as an interim backup and am now panicking something has happened to all of them! (don't say it!).
Thanks to anyone who can help.

maybe because you already have access to your own data files on the laptop you get a sharing violation when accessing your files on another disk. Try logging in as your husband and see if you can access your files on the caddied drive

Did you perhaps password protect ?

You could download PCNISPECTOR which will search the drive and recover the photos.......it s free
ButI would get the graphics card installed and put the hard drive back in aannnnddd....back up those fies!!!
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!

If you right click on the folder name for your profile, properties, do you have a securty tab? Are you planning putting this disk back in the original machine?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

OK, have tried logging on my laptop as my husband but still getting access denied on my documents.

Downloaded PCInspector, which seems to see documents and settings but doesn't let me open it. Tried searching for files which I can see (in other users as a test) and doesn't seem to locate them.
When I Rclick on my folder, and look at properties, I am a little worried as the size of the files it claims to contain is tiny!! only 6MB. When I Rclick on my documents - it says it is empty. HELP!!! Is this why it is saying access denied? Rclick properties also says read only, and the sharing says windows has disabled remote access.
I do plan to put this back in my pc once graphics card arrives.
Does this mean that all my stuff has gone?

It's either corrupt (chkdsk e: /F), or a rights issue, it may be better to wait until you have the graphics cards back before trying to tinker, you may be able to see them as soon as you boot it up in the original machine, if not, try chkdsk, pcinspector, restoration etc..

Thanks very much for the advice - think I had better wait - but already don't hold out much hope!

  • I wouldn't worry about it, it's highly likely that your data is either fine or recoverable, if you put the hd back into the original PC, and still can't see them, come back for advice, you need to be careful not to overwrite any of the data on the disk with other file if you end up needing to do recovery.

PS Norton Ghost.. good backup software
