I've got two collies aged five and one. The youngest one is still in the cage as he still chews sometimes.

I've just started leaving the cage door open on a night to see if I could trust him yet, but now both dogs sleep squashed up in the cage together!
Here I go again on my own....

I opted for a gradual increase in night time freedom.

Once they were fully house trained and old enough to sleep through the night without needing potty, I then started leaving the door open but arranged things so their potential movement was limited, over time allowing them more of an area until I was confident that this was okay.

After that I introduced them to my room and they would happily sleep through the night and not disturb me, although they quickly ditched their crates for the comfort of a chair-bed I had (which has since been replaced with a sofa).
  • I'm wondering same thing, we have two bulldogs eldest 15 months and pup is 6 months, would probably leave the eldest with door open now but don't trust pup yet, but think that the pup would probably cry to see the big one laid on the sofa whilst she's in her crate. Also found eldest one sometimes joins in with pup now and chews stuff up.
