How Long should it take to CLOSE a bank account

Hi,
I took a letter into my branch of lloyds at the end of last week asking them to close my current aacount and two savings account with immediate effect. They were all at a nil balance except for the current account which had a balance in credit of 70pence. In the letter I provided written permission for them to transfer any pennies 'left over' onto the balance of my credit card with them.
I just wondered how long it should take them to close the accounts down as I have just been on line and they are all still active.
They seem to be able to act very quickly when closing accounts down through 'their' choice.
Hope I havent waffled too much
Thanks

Shouldn't take more than a few days if they're as dormant as you suggest.
But couldn't you have closed them online (having transferred the 70p to your Credit Card first - and cancelled any active SOs / DDs)? That way it's overnight. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
hi,
I couldnt find anything online that gave me to option to close them thats why i went into the bank. The account has no S/o's or D/D etc they were all done with ages ago.
I left a tiny bit in the current account in credit because last month as I was about to close them a 30pence O/D appeared 9 the interest charge from the previous months use of the O/D) and I didnt want to send a letter requesting to have them closed down only to find that they couldnt do it because there was now a few pence owing from the use of 30pence in the overdraft.
I have a horrible feeling i am not making any sense in this thread now!
Anyway, i will give them till the end of this week and if nothing has happened I will go in and see them.:EasterBun ...what more do I need to say?!

I have to tell you ... I agree with that :rotfl:
Did vaguely understand - also the online closure options aren't always fully visible. So, yes, you check progress at the end of the week and get your £1 minus 30p = 70p back (just checking my understanding);)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
In my opinion, it is very difficult to close the current account. With Barclays for almost 6 years, when I tried to close the current and saving account. I wrote two letters to them in between two months. Went to their branch. Finally closed it one month AFTER. So in total, it almost took me 3 to 4 months to close the accounts.
HSBC, I had to write two letters to them to close my current account with them. Well, took 2 months.
American Express (credit card), I wrote a letter to them, they confirmed back. After one year, I still received statement from them. THEN I wrote another letter to them attached with their letter. Finally account closed. Well, took more than a year!0
