In desperation with all the threatening letters I have been getting from BG, this afternoon I picked up the phone and called the number on the top of the last one. Only rang THREE times and a very nice lady answered - I was so shocked I nearly dropped the phone, I was expecting the usual 20 min + wait.

Anyway I explained the whole sorry story to her and she confirmed that they now had two meter readings on their system. I told her that I had paid the final BG bill by return and had now paid my first bill with my new supplier. To cut to the chase she said she had now amended my account to a nil reading and I wouldn't be getting any further letters - so fingers crossed that is now sorted out.

Just goes to show, there are some human beings working at BG!!

  • I wish you luck. I too, have had the phone answered very quickly. You get to speak to pleasant Scottish sounding folk. They are very helpful, and apologize for the confusion. That they will sort it all out for you, but it will take a bit of time. Weeks go by and nothing happens, except that you receive a letter welcoming you as a new customer, that they want payment and when you phone again, they don't know why the system hasn't sent you your refund from the previously closed account, and they are confused as to why you have another account with them.

    utter utter rubbish

Oh no! I am not feeling so optimistic now, but really hope that is the last I hear from BG.

  • There are good people within BG - we found one eventually to sort out our switching problems. My advice is always get the full name of people you are speaking to & their extension number if you can. It makes life easier if you can phone and get back to the same person!

Hope it is now sorted for you.

We tried asking for full names but were refused the surname!
  • I'd definitely try to get their extension number in that case - and I'd also be asking to speak to someone else who can provide their full name. In our case, they did give full name and extension number. I guess it comes back to the helpfulness of the person who answers the phone.

Staff aren't obliged to give out their surname, there are many companies where staff will refuse it, but with utilities they are obliged to give you sufficient information so they can be identified ie their employee number or the extension number they were on when you called.

Got yet another threatening letter a few days ago, even after thinking all was sorted out.

Phoned the 0845 number immediately and spoke to a very helpful man who checked my account and confirmed that I definitely have a nil balance with them now and will not be bothered again. He apologized for the latest letter, said they are just churned out automatically and the nil balance hadn't got through before they were sent out. So hopefully that is the very last I will hear from BG!
